GATA was initiated in July 2008, and continues to be in high demand.

We started from providing regular free weekly Tango classes for seniors, veterans and adults in surrounding communities. Now we run different programs & projects providing educational opportunities and health and wellness benefits to veterans, people with disabilities, and other underserved populations.

Our wellness & health projects are programs specifically focusing on veterans, seniors, people with substance dependence, and former dancers and athletes with chronic injuries.

Today, every third Armed Forces veteran is afflicted with PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder) or other stress-related disorder. According to the Department of Veterans’ Affairs, current suicide rates are especially high. Veterans are committing suicide in these high numbers attributed to the following triggering points:

  • Depression

  • Survivor’s guilt

  • Self-blame for mission failure

  • Impaired thinking caused by alcohol or substance abuse

  • Traumatic brain injury

Some could tragically lose their silent battle; veterans account for one out of five suicides taking place nationwide. Countless other ex-military personnel are coping with stress, chronic pain, substance and behavioral addictions, or are severely affected by the addiction of a loved one or someone close to them.

GATA’s programs are committed to supporting this underserved population and their families through art and movement, including dance, yoga and sports, with abundant camaraderie and communal support. Special activities improves mood and boosts cognitive performance when used therapeutically for patients with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases, and other medical conditions.

In almost 10 years of teaching, we have encountered numerous people with disabilities whose lives were positively influenced by our support. For many participants, the gains proved to be truly transformative.
